Sentence type ชนิดของประโยค
ประโยคในภาษาอังกฤษแบ่งออกเป็น 4 ประเภทด้วยกันดังนี้ค่ะ
1. Simple sentence – คือประโยคความเดียว หลักการง่ายๆที่จะเป็น simple sentence ได้นั้นคือจะต้องมีใจความสำคัญเพียงใจความเดียว พูดง่ายๆก็คือ มีประธานกับกริยาที่บ่งบอกแค่การกระทำอย่างเดียว ซึ่งประโยคใจความเดียวอาจจะมีลักษณะดังต่อไปนี้
1.1 เป็นประโยคสั้นๆ ประกอบไปด้วยคำเพียงสองคำก็ถือว่าเป็น simple sentence แล้ว เช่น
- Larry smiled.
1.2 จะเป็นประโยคยาวๆก็ได้แต่มีแค่กริยาหลักเพียงตัวเดียว เช่น
- Larry who is my elder brother smiled happily with his friends.
** ส่วนที่ขีดเส้นใต้นั้นคือส่วนมาขยายตัวประธานและตัวกริยา ถึงแม้จะทำให้ประโยคยาวขึ้นแต่ใจความสำคัญก็ยังมีแค่ใจความเดียว
1.3 simple sentence อาจจะเป็นประโยคบอกเล่าหรือคำถามหรือปฏิเสธก็ได้ เช่น
- Did Larry smile happily?
- Larry didn’t smile happily with his friends.
2. Compound sentence – คือประโยคความรวม ซึ่งก็คือประโยคที่มีใจความสำคัญมากกว่า 1 ใจความ หรือมีประธานและกริยามากกว่า 1 ชุด โดยทั้งสองประโยคเชื่อมด้วยคำเชื่อมประเภท coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, so, for, nor, yet) และเมื่อแยกประโยคทั้งสองออกจากกันจะได้ประโยคที่มีใจความสมบูรณ์ ( Independent clause) เช่น
- She’s poor, but she’s a good girl.
- David got a lot of flowers in Valentine Day, for he is handsome and smart.
- This morning, I went to the bank, and I had lunch with my friends.
3. Complex sentence – คือประโยคความซ้อน คือประโยคที่มีประธานและกริยามากกว่า 1 ชุด และเชื่อมด้วย subordinating conjunction (when, while, if, although, after, before, as, since, etc.) เมื่อแยกทั้งสองประโยคออกจากกันจะได้ประโยคหนึ่งที่มีใจความสมบูรณ์ อยู่ได้โดยอิสระ (Independent clause) และอีกประโยคหนึ่งจะมีใจความไม่สมบูรณ์ ไม่สามารถอยู่ตามลำพังได้ (Dependent clause) ประโยคแบบหลังนี้มักจะมี subordinating conjunction นำหน้า เช่น
- If I were you, I wouldn’t do that.
- As we was walking home, the accident happened.
- We watched TV together after we had had dinner.
4. Compound-Complex sentence – คือประโยคที่มีทั้งความรวมและความซ้อนอยู่ด้วยกัน ดังนั้นมันจึงประกอบไปด้วยประโยคที่มีใจความสมบูรณ์อย่างน้อย 2 ประโยค และประโยคที่มีใจความไม่สมบูรณ์อีก 1 ประโยค เช่น
- Timmy forgot his wife’s birthday, so he gave her a very wonderful gift when he finally remembered.
- Although I don’t like cake, I bought coffee cake from the mall, and I like it so much.
